It’s the start of a new year and many Filipinos have jotted down their list of resolutions. But while we set new goals for ourselves, what kind of revitalizing have you planned for your homes? Here are some resolutions that will help you make your home ready for 2015.
1. Get organized and declutter.
Out with the old and in with the new. Applying this popular adage in your home is one of the best ways for you to enjoy a beautiful and comfortable house. Many of us acquire a lot of stuff each year and cramped cabinets are very common around December. Sometimes, we tend to forget about a favorite shirt or jacket because these are piled under all that clutter.
Check out each room and identify the things that you can throw away, donate, or sell. Take out those old books or furniture and put them up for sale in online ads. You will not only have a more visually appealing home, you’ll also earn money in the process. And resolve to think twice before buying trinkets or cute items that will only add to the clutter again. This will help you save more space as well as money.
2. Minimize your carbon footprint.
Losing weight is always a top resolution for many Filipinos. After gorging on scrumptious Noche Buena and Media Noche meals, everyone is looking forward to losing the additional pounds they gained. You can apply a similar concept in your home by cutting your energy use. Do this by turning off lights in rooms that are unoccupied, switching to energy efficient lighting, air drying your clothes instead of using the machine dryer, and using your air conditioner or fan less while the cool December breeze lingers.
This is also a great time to start green practices at home. Follow the proper waste management or use renewable energy such as solar panels to help you save electricity and to protect the environment at the same time. If you don’t have the cash budget for a solar panel unit, Pag-IBIG’s Home Improvement Loan gives you a chance to own one without shelling out money upfront.
3. Conserve water.
Water is a valuable, yet limited resource and everyone should collaborate in its conservation. While you are cutting back on alcoholic beverages and sodas (wherein you imbibed too much last New Year’s Eve), try also to lessen your water usage at home by doing these practices:
- You can start by replacing your old toilet bowl, which uses up to seven gallons of water per flush, with newer and more efficient models.
- Cut down your bubble bath time or use a water dipper (tabo) and pail (timba) when taking a bath.
- Ensure you turn off faucets properly so there are no leaks
- Practice using a glass when brushing your teeth.
There are many ways to conserve water. This infographic released by the government’s Official Gazette gives more options on water conservation tips.
4. Do home improvement projects with the family.
Many of us are resolute to balance our lifestyle and to spend more time with loved ones this year. Why not make each bonding moment enjoyable and productive simultaneously? Start a DIY project for your home or redecorate a part of your house. You can get your children to help you plant an herb garden or paint your living room with marsala, the color of the year. This will allow you to spruce up your home without breaking your wallet or adding more expenses.
5. Clean the air in your home.
When we think about air pollution, we immediately think about the one we find outdoors. But did you know that the air inside our homes could be as dangerous? Cigarette smoke, molds and allergens, carbon monoxide, and other volatile organic compounds from cleaning materials or paints present in your homes can contribute to this danger. Here are some ways on how you can improve the indoor air quality:
- Install an exhaust fan in the kitchen and bathroom.
- Use a dehumidifier to decrease moisture in indoor air.
- Insist on a “no-smoking zone” inside the house.
- Open windows and allow fresh air to come in.
- Avoid using aerosol sprays such as air fresheners, carpet cleaners, and furniture polish.
6. Secure your home.
Aside from clearing out the clutter in your home, it’s also the perfect time to conduct another home inspection. Here are some of the things you need to look into: check out water pipelines for leakage, ensure power outlets are working properly, and find out if there are broken locks or light bulbs that need to be replaced. Furthermore, you may want to think about installing home security systems for added home protection.
7. Learn something new.
While learning a new language or how to play a musical instrument will do wonders for your cognitive abilities, educating yourself on home finances will help you manage your house budget wisely. While you’re at it, familiarize yourself with financial terms and concepts. Just bought your new house?
