Cebu is the Place to Be
The word "Cebu" comes from the old Cebuano word sibo ("trade"), marking
the city's origins as a crossroads of commerce between the Philippines
and the rest of the world. The Cebuano name for the city, Sugbo,
commemorates the battle tactics applied by the old town's original
Hindu settlers against Muslim invaders. Considering Cebu a vital stop
on the trade route between Asia and the Americas, the Spanish invaders
set up a fort on the island from which they conducted raids on the
other parts of the archipelago.
Spanish rule brought a lot of changes to the city. Most of the
population were converted to Catholicism and the city is known as the
cradle of Christianity in the Philippines; today, the Santo Niño de
Cebu draws devotees from all over the world. The colonial authorities
also established numerous educational institutions throughout the
sprawling town, such as the Colegio (now University) of San Carlos and
the Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion. Under American rule, the city
only grew in stature, becoming the seat of government for the Visayas.
Today, Cebu City is the southern Philippines' center of education,
trade, entertainment, and culture. Cebuano speakers form a significant
percentage of the country's population, and many of the Philippines'
leaders, both during the revolution and its young history as an
independent republic, trace their roots to Cebu.
