Las Piñas City: At the Crossroads of the Past, the Present, and the Future

One of Metro Manila's up-and-coming commercial centers, Las Piñas is situated along the border of the metropolis and the province of Cavite. Long known as a fishing settlement, Las Piñas was also famed for its salt pans, the products of which were in wide demand for preserving and flavoring food throughout the colonies. Today, the city is known for its well-preserved historic landmarks, shopping malls, and residential areas.

Starting from Salt

Historians tell us that the Las Piñas coastline once held hectares upon hectares of salt pans, into which water from Manila Bay was pumped and left to evaporate, leaving behind mounds of salt. The city's name came from the rugged, rocky shores of Manila Bay ("Las Peñas") which were eventually corrupted into its present form. As a Spanish coastal town, it had an old church that housed the Bamboo Organ, known worldwide for its unique sound.

The residents of Las Piñas have taken great care of their cultural heritage. Among the structures included in the Las Piñas Historical Corridor were the Central Elementary School, the restored salt pans, the fish port, and the old Molino dam between Las Piñas and Bacoor, Cavite. Scattered around the city are new and bustling commercial centers, such as SM Southmall, Starmall, and Robinsons Place, making the city an example of how the old and the new can coexist.

As a residential center, Las Piñas has at least two large subdivisions managed by BF Homes – BF Resort Village and BF Almanza. The children of the city are served by a network of public and private schools, including Elizabeth Seton School, one of the top high schools in Metro Manila.
