General Trias: The Export Processing Hub of the Philippines
One of Cavite's newest cities, General Trias nevertheless has a rich history that is closely intertwined with the Philippine Revolution. Located 35 kilometers from Metro Manila, its topography ranges from flatland near the Manila Bay coast to rugged hills going south to Tagaytay Ridge, with vast industrial estates and residential subdivisions dominating the landscape.
From Ranches to Villages
When looking at old maps, one will not find General Trias. This is because the town was previously known as "San Francisco de Malabon", a name that paid homage to the town's patron saint and the bamboo trees that formed a large portion of the rural forest. In 1896, revolutionaries led by General Mariano Trias stormed the municipal tribunal, setting off a series of attacks on Spanish installations throughout Cavite. The Tejeros Convention, held in 1897, named General Emilio Aguinaldo as the first President of the Philippines after an election that is controversial up to present day.
General Trias remained a quiet agricultural and residential community until the turn of the 21st century, when the first industrial estates, the New Cavite Industrial City and the Cavite Export Processing Zone (CEPZ), chose General Trias as their location. To date, there are more than 100 factories in the CEPZ, with hundreds more in the city's other industrial parks
To cope with the demand from employees and their dependents, real estate developers have also built more than 45 subdivisions across General Trias City. Education is provided by the Lyceum of the Philippines-Cavite and the soon-to-be-finished AMA Computer University. Meanwhile, the 300-hectare Eagle Ridge Golf and Country Club, one of the largest in the country, hosts international open tournaments.
