Talisay City: Metro Cebu's Southern Frontier
With its residents having a reputation for self-reliance and independence, Talisay City is fast coming out of the shadows of its larger neighbors to the north. Much of the city's development has been spurred by the expansion of Cebu's road network, making it a more accessible residential center for those who work and study in the metropolis.
From Religious Estate to Residential Haven
Like many other cities in the Philippines, Talisay City was first founded as an agricultural estate in 1648 by the Augustinian religious order. In the mid-19th century, it became an independent municipality, with an economy heavily dependent on fishing, logging and the manufacture of explosives.
Because of its status as a trade center between Cebu City and the rest of the island, it was captured by guerilla forces in World War II and was the landing site of Allied liberation forces. This event, which eventually led to the recapture of Cebu Island, is commemorated annually throughout the province.
Talisay City is now a progressive urban center, with development brought about mainly by the building of large highways leading from Cebu City going to the southern portion of the island. It is also much in demand as a tourist spot, with white sand beaches and coral reefs attracting thousands of visitors each year.
Buying a House in Talisay City
Because of its proximity to the heart of Metro Cebu, Talisay City has become a popular commuter town, with private subdivisions offering amenities such as round-the-clock security, clubhouses, and recreational facilities. These include Corona del Mar, Deca Homes Baywalk, Midori Plains, and Malibu Residences. House prices range from P1.4 million to P35 million, making Talisay City a rather affordable yet upscale residential suburb.
